To find out the number of neutrons, you subtract the atomic number (the amount of protrons or electrons) from the atomic mass (the amount of neutrons) Since the atomic mass is the number of everything in the atom, subtracting the number of protons (or electrons) will give you what is left of the atom, which is the neutron

You subtract the number of protons from the atomic mass.

you subract the atomic number from the atomic mass to find the number of nuetrons. This works because if the atomic mass is 19 AMU, and there are nine protons and they each weigh 1 AMU, and you do this the right way it should equal 10.

To find the weight of neutrons, you have to subtract the atomic number from the atomic mass. The atomic number is the number of protons or electrons, and the atomic mass is the mass is the mass of the electrons, protons, and neutrons. The electrons don’t weight anything but the protons and neutrons are both 1 amu. The atomic number would be the same as the mass of the protons so by subtracting it from the atomic mass, it gives you the number of neutrons.

You subtract the smaller number from the larger number. Like if the top was 6 and the bottum is 12 the answer is 6 neutrons.

You figure out how many nuetrons in an atom by subtracting the atomic number from the atomic mass. Neutrons and Protons weigh one AMU each. The total weight of protons and nuetrons minus the weight of protons gives you the total weight of the nuetrons.

to find the number of neutrons you subtract the atomic mass (the total weight of the atom) from the atomic number (the number of protons or electrons). that is because the whole weight is nuetrons and protons and if you know how many protons there are you con figure out how many neutrons there are.

  • Isaac J. // February 25, 2008 at 4:29 pm

To find the number of neutrons in an atom, you subract the atomic number from the atomic mass. Because both the proton and the neutron weigh one amu each, the total weight of the protons and nuetrons (atomic mass) minus the number of protons will equal the number of neutrons.

Due to the fact that the atomic number is the number of protons/electrons in an atom, and that a proton weighs 1 amu, you would take this away from the atomic mass to find the number of equally weighted neutrons. Example: Copper (Cu)- Atomic Number 29; Atomic Mass 64. 64-29= 35

You subtract the number of protons from the atomic mass. This gives you the amu (atomic mass unit) of the neutrons in the atom

  • Jesse D. // February 25, 2008 at 4:31 pm

To find the number of neutrons in an atom you subtract the atomic number from the atomic mass. You do this because the atomic number is the number of neutrons in the atom and the atomic mass is the total of everything in the atom.

  • Tim P. // February 25, 2008 at 4:31 pm

To know the number of neutrons you subtract the atomic number from the atomic mass. For example if you atomic mass is 20 and the atomic number is 10 you just subtract 1o from 20 which is 10. This formula works because when you subtract the number of protons from the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus you only have the neutrons making the formula work.

To find the number of neutrons in an element you subtract the atomic number from the atomic mass because the atomic mass is the weight of the protons and neutrons put together, each proton and neutron weighs 1 atomic mass unit, and the atomic number is the number of protons, so if you subtract the number of protons from everything put together what ever is left will give you the number of neutrons. It sounds a whole lot more complicated than it really is. It’s really very simple.

  • Grania P. // February 25, 2008 at 5:17 pm

In order to find the number of neutrons in an atom, you have to subtract the atomic number from the number signifying the atomic mass. This is because the neutrons make up the percent of the nucleus that is not made up by the protons.

TO FIND THE NUMBER OF NUETRONS FROM AN ATOM, YOU HAVE TO SUBTRACT THE NUMBER OF PROTONS OR ELECTRONS FROM THE ATOMIC MASS. WHEN YOU SUBRACT THE PROTONS OUT OF THE MASS, YOU GET WHATS LEFT- THE NUMBER OF NUETRONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Grace // February 25, 2008 at 5:18 pm

To find the number of neutrons in an atom, you subtract the atomic number from the atomic mass. This is because each proton and neutron are equal to 1 amu and the number of protons is part of the weight. To find the other part (the neutrons) you would subtract the weight you already have from the total weight.

  • Courtney // February 25, 2008 at 5:19 pm

You subtract the atomic number from the atomic mass and thats how you get how many neutrons there are. The reason you subract the mass from the atomic number is bbecause the atomic number is the neutrons and protons added together.

  • Abdi Ali // February 25, 2008 at 5:20 pm

You find the nuetron by subtracting the atomic number and the atomic mass. You do this becuase the atomic mass is how much the atoms weigh and the atomic number is how much protons there are.

  • Iqbal H. // February 25, 2008 at 5:20 pm

To find out the number of neutrons, you subtract the atomic number from the atomic mass. Like if atomic mass is 6 (for carbon C) and u subract the number of atomic mass witch is 12 (for carbon) u allrardy know is 6 all you gotta do is subtract

  • Peter Nguyen // February 25, 2008 at 5:20 pm

You take away the number of protons from the atomic mass. This gives you the atomic mass unit of the neutrons in the atom.

  • John T // February 25, 2008 at 5:21 pm

You have to subtract the atomic number from the atomic mass. You’ve got to do this because the atomic mass is the mass of everything and when you take out the protons you are left with the neutrons.

  • Garang A. // February 25, 2008 at 5:21 pm

you subtract the atomic mass from the atomic number. You do this because the atomic mass is the mass of everything and by taking the number of protons you’re left with the number of neutrons.

To find the amount of nuetrons in an atom you need to subtract the Atomic Number from the Atomic Mass. Atomic Mass is how much the whole atom weighs. A proton weighs 1 AMU and electrons do not weigh anything. If the atom weighs 19 AMU and it has 9 protons and electrons do not weigh anything then you need to subtract the 9 AMU from the 19 AMU.

    Atomic # - Atomic mass…

  • Marcus, Dylan, Cece // February 25, 2008 at 6:31 pm

Atomic Number - Atomic mass = Neutrons

  • Dylan B // February 25, 2008 at 6:31 pm

To find out the number of neutrons in an atom all you have to do is take the atomic number and subtract it from the atomic mass. This will always work because both neutrons and protons have a mass of one AMU.

  • Cece C-S // February 25, 2008 at 6:32 pm

To find the number of neutrons, you subtract the atomic number from the atomic mass. Each proton weighs 1 AMU, and the electrons weigh almost nothing. Each neutron also weighs 1 AMU. The atomic mass is the total weight, so if you subtract the number of protons from the mass, you get the neutrons.

  • Alyssa M. // February 25, 2008 at 6:32 pm

To find the number of neutrons is by finding the atomic number. You subtract the atomic number from the atomic mass to get the amount of neutrons.

  • Bounahra Kim // February 25, 2008 at 6:33 pm

To find the amount of neutrons in an atom, you have to subtract the atomic mass from the atomic number. A proton weights 1 AMU and an electron weights about nothing so we say it’s 0. The atomic mass is the weight of everything in an atom so you subtract the number of protons from it and you are left with the number of neutrons.

You find the number of nuetrons in a an atom and you subtract the Atomic# from the Atomic mass. proton weigh 19 AMU & electons doesn’t weight anything.

  • Madeleine W. // February 25, 2008 at 6:34 pm

In order to find the ammount of neutrons in an atom you have to subtract the atomic number from the atomic mass. Protrons and neutrons weigh one AMU (atomic mass units) and electrons weigh zero.

  • Mary G // February 25, 2008 at 6:35 pm

To find the number of nuetrons in an atom you subtract the atomic number from the atomic mass.

  • Sabir A. // February 25, 2008 at 6:36 pm

To find the number of neutrons, you have to subtract the number atomic mass, and atomic number to find the amount of neutron.

  • Zam Zam A. // February 25, 2008 at 6:36 pm

To find the number of neutrons in an atom you have to subtract the atomic mass from the atomic number. The atomic mass is how much the protons, nuetrons, and electrons weigh. The atomic number is how many protons. When you subtract the two numbers you will get the number of neutrons.

  • Chelsea J // February 25, 2008 at 6:37 pm

To find the number of nuetrons you just subtract the smaller number from the bigger number. Say you have to find the number of nuetrons for Potassium(K). The Atomic mass is 39 and the protons and electrons are 19. So there would be 20 nuetrons because 39-19=20!

to find the number of neutrons you subtract the atomic mass from the atomic number that is entire weight that is in nuetrons and protons
if you know how many protons there, are you can find out how many neutrons there are.

  • Alexis W. // February 28, 2008 at 2:40 pm

To find the number of neutrons in an atom you take the bottom number( atomic weight) and subtract the top number( atomic number) from it!
